We officially became the Mad Beach Jacks in 2017 when we married on the beach where it all began - Madeira Beach. We love this little fishing village we call home. This beach town has rapidly grown, but we are here to celebrate its history, create fun opportunities for folks visiting our area, and educate tourists about tiki culture and beach life.
Tiki culture is an American-originated art, music, and entertainment movement inspired by Polynesian, Melanesian and Micronesian cultures. The name comes from Tiki, the Māori name for the first human, often represented in the form of hei-tiki, a pendant and important taonga.
Despite its diverse geographic origins and ancient history, the Tiki aesthetic has become centralized into a simplified view of Pacific cultures. This simplification and commercialization is controversial and we want to be respectful in our approach to Tiki culture.
Americans first began incorporating Tiki carvings in themed bars and restaurants in California in the 1930s. Hollywood movies further exploited the genre, wetting tourists' appetites with exotic scenery, tales of forbidden love, and heroic exploits. Following World War II and the experiences of American servicemen, Tiki culture evolved and reached a peak of popularity in the 50s and 60s.
A resurgence of interest in Tiki Culture began in the early 2000s, with the current iteration often being more of a mashup of Caribbean and Polynesian elements (the complex cocktails of the Tiki world are usually composed of flavors and items associated with the Caribbean). Several contemporary musical artists have fed the renaissance with songs celebrating island and beach life, and in many coastal towns throughout the U.S. you'll find tiki bars which mix these different aesthetics.
Just like the diverse islands and people at its source, Tiki Culture is complex. Songs will still be sung about Tiki Bars, and tourists will continue to drink fruity libations with exotic names. It is celebrated as a state of mind and appeals to many who associate the islands with vacation and escape from the stresses of life. While this is a romanticized version of island life, it is an integral part of our American culture and very much relevant for those who live and vacation in our coastal towns.
At Mad Beach Jacks, we want to be respectful and honest about the history of Tiki Culture. We encourage further reading about retroism, colonial nostalgia, urban archaeology, and cultural appropriation. We hope that through our tiki bar tours, we can have a whole lot of fun and a little bit of learning.
